Meet Your Captain: 20+ Years on St John Waters

Your Captain,

I’ve had the good fortune and privilege of living on St John for over two decades, and I’m grateful to have found a way of life I thoroughly enjoy. My job is not only to drive a boat, but to share my 20+ years of local knowledge and experience so you have an absolutely fantastic day and stay safe.

Some of my first island jobs were Dive Master, bartender and First Mate. Travel is a passion. I’ve been to over 37 countries, lived in a few, and written four travel guides, including one for St John. I also dabble in sailing races and sailing abroad. Whether it’s above or below the water, I know my way around the islands and what it’s like to be on holiday.

Most of my guests return year after year and book with me every time.

Whether you book with me or not, I highly recommend getting out on the water. You won’t truly experience the islands unless you do.

Why Book a Captain Instead of Renting a Bareboat?

A bareboat rental can be great for experienced boaters who know the area. But St John’s waters take local knowledge, and most visitors on vacation would rather relax than navigate. Here’s what a captain handles for you:

  • Local knowledge: I know where the reefs, shallows and currents are, which bays are calm today, and which snorkel spots are worth the stop. That knowledge comes from 20+ years of living here.
  • The history behind what you’re seeing: St John has a long past, from its early inhabitants to the Danish colonial era and the old stone ruins you can see from the water in Virgin Islands National Park. I can tell you what happened in these bays and why the island looks the way it does, so a pretty view becomes a story you’ll remember. A map can’t give you that. (I’ve written about this island’s history and sights in my own travel guide, so I enjoy sharing it.)
  • Park rules and moorings: Parts of the Virgin Islands National Park have rules about where boats can anchor or moor. I handle that, so you don’t have to worry about it.
  • Weather and sea conditions: I watch the wind and swell and change the plan to keep your day comfortable and safe.
  • A day that’s actually a vacation: You swim, snorkel, eat and relax. I drive, fuel, anchor and tidy up.
  • Safety: A licensed captain and approved safety gear are on board for every trip.

Not sure which is right for you? Ask me. If a bareboat is the better fit for your group, I’ll tell you.

All the best, and be well.
