When a Self-Drive Rental Is the Better Fit

If you’re an experienced boater and enjoy doing the navigating yourself, a mid-size center console is a great way to spend a day. For a relaxed day at the north shore beaches, a dinghy is easy and affordable. Many of our guests own boats at home, and some rent on one day and charter with us on another.

When a Captain Is Worth It

  • Everyone gets to enjoy the day: nobody has to stay with the boat or keep an eye on the weather.
  • High season: Maneuvering around local boat traffic can be stressful.
  • Local knowledge: which bay is calmest today, where the turtles are feeding, and when the moorings fill up.
  • Boat-access-only spots: secluded beaches and reefs that take local experience to find and reach safely.
  • Families with kids or first-time snorkelers: a captain chooses calm, shallow stops and helps in the water.
  • Pickup near you: Cruz Bay Beach, the Westin, Chocolate Hole or St Thomas.

“Iggie is very knowledgeable about St John and the surrounding areas, and knows all of the best snorkel spots.”

What Boaters Should Know About St John’s National Park Waters

About 60% of St John is Virgin Islands National Park, and the park has its own boating rules. Violation fines are Federal and will follow you home. Whether you rent or charter, these apply:

  • Moorings: use the park’s mooring balls. White balls with a blue stripe are for boats up to 60 ft, and orange balls with a blue stripe are for snorkel and dive stops.
  • Anchoring: allowed only in the designated anchorages off Francis Bay and Lind Point, and only in sand, never on coral.
  • Speed: no wake and no more than 5 mph in mooring fields and within 500 ft of them.
  • Swim areas: boats aren’t allowed in marked swim areas. Small boats reach some beaches only through marked access channels.

Full rules: Virgin Islands National Park marine visitor information. On a RocknRolla trip, your captain handles all of this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive the boat myself?

No. On a RocknRolla trip your captain drives, so everyone in your group can swim, snorkel and relax.”

Do I need a license to rent a boat on St John?

Rental companies set their own requirements. Small dinghies usually need no experience, while center consoles require boating experience and approval. No license or experience is needed for a captained trip.

Is a captained boat more expensive than a self-drive rental?

Not by much. A mid-size center console rents for about $495 for a half day or $750 for a full day, plus fuel. A RocknRolla trip is $495 to $705, plus fuel and gratuity, and includes your captain and snorkel gear.

Can a rental boat go all around St John?

It depends on the boat. Small dinghies and small center consoles usually stay on the north shore. Mid-size and larger center consoles can go around the island depending on sea conditions. A captained trip goes wherever the day’s conditions are best.
